Each team plays two games against all the other league rivals during the season, one game at home and one game away. The club with the most points at the end of the season becomes German champion.
If teams are level on points, tie-breakers are applied in the following order: goal difference, total goals scored, head-to-head points, head-to-head goals scored, head-to-head away goals scored, total away goals scored.
Currently, the top four teams enter directly into the group stage of the Champions League. The two teams at the bottom are relegated directly, while the 16th-placed team is sent to a relegation playoff.
