League format : England : Premier League 2025/2026
The English Premier League (EPL) is probably one of the most popular football competitions in the world. The current format of the Premiership was created in 1995, when the number of clubs was reduced from twenty-two to twenty. Each team plays against all the other teams in the league twice, for a total of 38 matches for each team per season.
Teams are ranked by total points, then goal difference, and then goals scored. If still equal, teams are deemed to occupy the same position. If there is a tie for the championship, for relegation, or for qualification to other competitions, the head-to-head record between the tied teams is taken into consideration.
The top four teams in the English Premier League qualify directly for the group stage of the Champions League. The three bottom teams are relegated to the Football League Championship.
