League format : Italy : Serie A 2026/2027
Serie A is the highest football (Calcio) league in Italy. The new format was introduced in the 2004/05 season, when the number of teams was increased from 18 to 20. Each team plays each other twice, once at their home ground and once at their opponents, making a season-total of 38 games. The team ending with the most points gains the Italian Serie A title, Scudetto.
When two or more teams are tied in points, the deciding tie-breakers are as follows: head-to-head points, head-to-head goal difference, goal difference overall, goals scored.
According to the final standings, the first four teams enter the group phase of the UEFA Champions League. The bottom three teams in Serie A are relegated to the Italian Second Division, Serie B.
